Steve Montgomery's "Crazy Town" opens like someone flipped every switch to maximum and nobody's coming back to fix it. Distorted guitars, a pulsing synth bassline driving hard underneath, drums pounding fast and relentless... I was locked in before the ten-second mark.
Next the chanted vocals drop out and this ascending synthesizer line cuts through, soaring clean above all that guitar grit. Pure contrast. It floored me.
The vocals come at you in rhythmic chants, stacked and almost shouted in unison, riding the beat rather than sitting above it. No long held notes, no traditional melodic singing. Just something aggressive and communal that suits the chaos of the track.
The whole thing has that late-90s industrial rock and electronic crossover energy, where the synth bassline is as danceable as the guitars are heavy. Montgomery pulls that off across the nine-track release Living the Dream Right Now. "Crazy Town" is a highlight, and when that synthesizer line lifts off the second time, I felt it in my chest.
