Peter Melodist's debut single "Fear" is not what I expected from a 13-year-old's first release. It's slow, spacious, and it pulls you somewhere far away.
The track sits in indie rock territory but leans hard into shoegaze and neo-psychedelic atmosphere. No rush anywhere. The tempo drifts, the reverb blooms wide, the guitars decay into each other until the space between notes does as much work as the notes themselves. That open, fog-thick production stopped me cold the first time through.
Then the vocals come in... and they're doing something I didn't see coming. Peter layers his voice into something chant-like, repeating the word "fear" over and over until it stops functioning as a lyric and starts functioning as texture, practically another instrument woven into the arrangement. His voice sits buried soft and distant in the mix, and that restraint is exactly what makes it land the way it does.
Pure atmosphere.
This kid wrote and recorded this at 13. I kept coming back to that fact and it kept hitting differently every time.
