Flywheel's "CryBaby" opens with a filtered synth build that lasts maybe fifteen seconds... and then Paul Kelleher's bassline locks in and it's on. Rolling, relentless, never quitting from 0:18 straight through to the outro. It pulls you forward before a single vocal even lands.
When they do land, it's a whole thing. Mark Tangney's low deadpan delivery in the verses reads almost like someone narrating their own skepticism, flat and dry, and then Ann Marie Ryan's chanted "What's the sense in that?" hits the chorus and the temperature just shifts. Her voice doesn't ease in. It arrives sharp, high, and insistent, stacked like a call-and-response with itself, and I stopped and replayed that first entry at 0:34 three times before I even finished the song.
Pure contrast.
The production is clean and punchy, vintage synth textures sitting right alongside what sounds like a live drum kit, and there's some kind of metallic percussion cutting through the mix that keeps things just slightly off-kilter. The bridge around 1:55 filters everything back, strips it down, then the final push hits harder for it.
Cork's finest are back and they sound like they never left.
