Chet Nordy's "For You" opens quietly. And I mean quietly, then bursts wide open. The verses are close and intimate just whispering something held back for years... which makes total sense once you know Nordy aka Dave Nordstrom wrote this for his wife fifteen years ago.
Then the chorus arrives and the whole thing gets even bigger. Guitars stack up fast and guest vocalist Josh Paulino's voice tears straight through the noise, raspy and climbing into a belt that costs something. You can hear where the restraint finally breaks.
That lurch from hush to roar is the song's whole spine. Paulino moves from a breathy, measured low-end in the verses to overwhelming emotion and the second the chorus lands, and the transition doesn't soften once across the entire runtime.
One man. Every instrument. A basement studio in Freeland, Michigan.
Knowing Nordstrom built Nordy Studios himself and tracked everything solo makes the sheer size of this thing feel almost disorienting. The production shouldn't sound this large. But it does.
The way the track slides out on a soft synth pad, and after everything that came before it...the quiet ending hit me hard.
