Afternoon Sister, the Boise-area indie rock band fronted by Alice Ventura, sets breathy intimacy against blunt force on this track, "I Guess It Is Goodbye," from the five-song Reset E.P. The distance between those extremes is striking, and Ventura sounds convincing at both volumes.

The acoustic guitar and close, soft vocal give the quieter passages an unguarded feel. Against that restraint, the heavy drums and dense, distorted chords sound genuinely aggressive. Ventura matches their force with a repetitive, almost chanting delivery. The voice takes on a rougher edge without losing its melodic identity, which makes the louder material more interesting than sheer volume alone would.

A sustained low-frequency drone adds an unsettled tension of its own. It’s an effective texture precisely because there’s so little to it; the recording doesn’t need constant activity to hold attention. The contrast can be jarring, but smoothing it out would take away much of the track’s bite.

Ray Hedgpeth produced, engineered, mixed, and mastered the EP, recorded at Cumulus and M51. Here, the production gives both the sparse passages and the heavier attack enough definition to register clearly.

Ventura’s ability to make a hushed melody and a forceful chant equally persuasive gives Afternoon Sister a compelling range.
