"Caught In A Flashback" starts where most songs end. You feel it before you can process it, those synth pads pooling wide and slow in the outro refrain, dropping first, and by the time the track folds back into itself you're already turned around, like trying to place a memory you're not sure is yours.
The beat is low, punchy trip-hop with a real 90s weight. Deep bass, delay-soaked guitar licks flickering at the edges, arpeggiated synths threading through the gaps. Patient music. It doesn't rush you.
This is the first Stomp Box Choir single with Howsie and Joe Stratton sharing lead vocals, and that pairing is where the track gets genuinely strange, two voices intertwining, airy and melodic up top, then chopped and chanted in the chorus like some kind of incantation. Insistent. Almost unsettling.
At 2:48 those two vocal lines stack on top of each other… and that's it. The minor-to-major shift underneath opens something up, claustrophobia cracking into something close to peace. I couldn't stop replaying it.
Dark, reflective, and unlike most of what's landing in my queue right now.
