"Deadly" opens spare, with a brief keyboard introduction before the vocals, bass, and drums enter together, giving the melody somewhere to stand. Melinda Joy is patient here, and that patience matters.
The wordless vocal harmonies are where it shifts. High-register layers pile in over the rhythm section and suddenly the arrangement is twice as wide. Then the distorted electric guitar enters with a bright recurring riff and the track stops being gentle entirely. Lead vocals follow suit, moving from breathy and close to something projected and forceful. It earns the escalation.
It’s been a little deadly in my dream
The final stretch is the most interesting part. Overlapping vocal phrases stack over full instrumentation, building to maximum density, and then the drums and bass just stop. One sustained chord fades out. Blunt and right.
Third single of 2026 for Joy, following "Out of the Blue" and "Too Late." If "Deadly" is the preview of her 2027 album, Dreaming has real potential.
