Jennifer Silva worked for nearly ten years in folk-inflected and Americana-adjacent territory, so "Surrounded by Monsters," the lead single from her fifth studio album, lands as a genuine shift. Released October 23 on XVibe Records, it is the first music Silva has put out as a newly signed artist on the label, and it does not ease anyone in gently.
Co-written and produced with Errick Lewis, the track lands in alternative rock territory with a real industrial edge, distorted, heavy, and driven by percussion locked to electronic precision. Silva and Lewis have built a piece that comes across less as a song and more as a reckoning. The vocal performance moves from urgent and controlled to full-throated and soaring, and a closing piano figure, spare and reverberant, pulls the whole thing toward grief instead of any sense of victory. The premise calls for exactly that.
Surrounded by Monsters is both a warning and a battle cry. We see them now. They are everywhere. They can’t hide anymore. As overwhelming as that may be, it’s time to reclaim our power. We will not let the monsters win. We will not lose our humanity. If we return to nature and to one another, hopefully, one day we will wake up from this nightmare.
Silva is not venting. She is organizing.
