Icky Rogers comes out swinging with "Opening Act," and from the first bar, something hooks you. The bassline does something unexpected, it moves like a second melody, snaking beneath every line instead of just holding the pocket. That alone separates this from the pack.
Rogers raps and sings in a smooth mid-register that sits right between hip-hop phrasing and R&B melody, and when the voice settles into the hook there's a warmth there, lived-in, like someone who has been waiting a long time to say exactly this. The performance metaphors land without overexplaining, "opening act," "headliner," "backstage", you feel the weight without being hit over the head.
I would tell them to come out sooner. You got this, you got yourself.
That directness is all over this track. Cosmic, funky production… layered but never cluttered. Rogers sounds open in a way that's hard to fake.
